Cooling Tower Testing & Commissioning

Before a cooling tower is handed over, it needs to be tested to confirm it runs correctly and performs as designed. Stolz Engineering, the official distributor of Marley cooling towers in Singapore, carries out testing and commissioning on site, measuring water flow, temperatures and motor performance, and fine-tuning the fan and mechanical settings. We provide this service in Singapore and Thailand.

Why It Matters

Commissioning confirms that a new or upgraded cooling tower delivers the cooling it was designed for. It catches installation issues early, before they become costly problems, and the measurements give a useful baseline for future maintenance.

What We Test

Water Flow and Temperatures: We measure the water flow rate, hot water temperature, cold water temperature and wet bulb temperature to check the tower’s cooling performance.

Motor Performance: We measure the motor’s running current (ampere) and operating power (kW) to confirm it runs within its rating.

Fan Settings: We adjust the fan blade angle and fan tip clearance so the fan moves the right amount of air efficiently.

Mechanical Alignment: We check the alignment between the mechanical components, such as the motor, driveshaft or coupling, and gearbox, to prevent vibration and wear.

How It Works

1. Pre-start checks: we check the mechanical alignment and fan settings before start-up.

2. Start-up and measurement: we run the tower and measure flow rate, water temperatures, wet bulb temperature, running ampere and operating kW.

3. Adjustment: we fine-tune the fan blade angle and tip clearance where needed.

4. Handover: we share the test results with you before handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cooling tower testing and commissioning?

It’s the process of checking that a cooling tower is installed correctly and performs as designed before handover. This includes measuring water flow, water temperatures and motor performance, and adjusting the fan and mechanical settings.

What do you measure during commissioning?

We measure the flow rate, hot water temperature, cold water temperature, wet bulb temperature, motor running current (ampere) and operating power (kW). We also adjust the fan blade angle and tip clearance, and check the alignment between mechanical components.

Why is wet bulb temperature measured?

A cooling tower’s performance depends on the wet bulb temperature of the surrounding air, which is the lowest temperature the water could theoretically be cooled to. Measuring it lets us compare the tower’s actual performance with its design conditions.

Can you test an existing cooling tower?

Yes. If your cooling tower’s performance has dropped, our team can carry out these checks as part of our consultation and problem analysis service.

Need Testing and Commissioning?

Tell us about your cooling tower project, and our team will arrange testing and commissioning to confirm it performs as designed.
